NC State Wins ACCHL Tournament, Ready for Regionals

NC State won the ACCHL tournament this past weekend and retain their remarkable 25-game winning streak as they head to the ACHA Southeast Regional as ACCHL Champions.

Three North Carolina teams were represented in the tournament which was held at the Fairgrounds Annex in Winston-Salem, home of host team Wake Forest.  UNC Charlotte were the third NC team in the tournament.  In the quarterfinals on Friday, February 15th NC State faced St. Joseph's while Wake Forest and UNC Charlotte faced each other.  State easily beat St. Joe's 11-1 while Charlotte lost in overtime to Wake Forest.

For the semi-finals on Saturday State would face Wake Forest and the winner would face the victor of the other semi between Virginia and Georgetown.  State would defeat Wake Forest by a score of 5-2 and Virginia would beat Georgetown 5-4 to set up a cross-border showdown between NC State and Virginia.

Prior to the tournament NC State play-by-play announcer Zak Selwaeh mentioned on the Redvolution Rampage Podcast that Virginia would be their toughest opponent if they faced them in the tournament.  Selwaeh was right as it was a tightly contested affair, but State managed to come out on top, winning the game and the ACCHL bragging rights by a score of 4-2.

With the ACCHL Championship in hand they head into the ACHA Division 2 Southeast Regional tournament as the 8th seed.  The tournament will be played in Lynchburg, Virginia with the opening round on Friday, March 1st and the championship games on Sunday, March 3rd.  The two championship games on Sunday will determine who joins #1 Florida Gulf Coast and #2 Penn State as the South East representatives for the ACHA Nationals.  With State in the #8 spot it means they do not play in the opening round on that Friday and will have their first game on Saturday against #5 Rider University who call the state of New Jersey as their home.

While the ACCHL was essential a cake walk for the Wolfpack, this will be a whole new adventure for them.  Every opponent will be of their caliber or better (sadly) and will prove whether their 25-game winning streak reflects their high-scoring, hard-hitting game will translate to continued success in the Regionals.
